The Ride Begins (Nearly!)
The cycling is yet to commence but the 2017 Ride Against Domestic Violence is under way!
Riders and support crew assembled at Parliament House in Perth this morning before they boarded a bus to Busselton, where the ride is set to begin tomorrow morning.
After arriving in Busselton, the riders were introduced by Libby Mettam MLA (Vasse) at an afternoon tea reception in Stilts café. Deputy Premier Roger Cook MLA–one of the 15 riders–discussed the importance of the ride.
“We all have a responsibility to talk loudly and raise awareness about domestic violence,” he said.
One of the refuges supported by the ride is Tuart House (Communicare) in Busselton, which aims to enhance the safety of both single women and women with children through crisis response via emergency accommodation, case management, advocacy, outreach and therapeutic support.
At the afternoon tea reception, Kate Jeffries, a representative from Tuart House (Communicare), spoke about the positive impact of donations for women and children who depend on the services offered by the women’s shelter.
